Huish Academy

Science

The Universe is full of unexplained wonder. It is up to us to go and explain it

The Science department is one of the largest in the Academy and is made up of ten full time and two part-time teachers. In addition, we have a specialist science HLTA and excellent support from three full time and two part time technicians. We are fortunate to have twelve well-equipped laboratories serviced from a central prep room. Each of the laboratories is fitted with an interactive whiteboard and one of the laboratories also has a suite of computers.

Curriculum
In KS3 and 4, pupils are taught in ability sets within two half-year populations, called Huish and Episcopi.

KS3 - 6 hours per fortnight
Pupils are taught general science in Year's 7 and 8. From Year 9 onwards, pupils are mostly taught under the separate science headings of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The department have adopted the Collins scheme of work in response to the new National Curriculum.

KS4 – 9 hours per fortnight
Pupils start the Edexcel GCSE courses early in the spring term of Year 9. The majority of pupils follow the Science + Additional Science route, with the top two sets following the Separate (Triple) Science route.
