The curriculum offered by Huish Sixth builds on the strong principles that have resulted in such great outcomes for our pre -16 students. These principles include:
By providing rich and varied contexts for students to acquire, develop and apply a broad range of knowledge, understanding and skills, the curriculum will enable students to think creatively and critically, to solve problems and to make a difference for the better.
The Huish Sixth curriculum offer builds on our undoubted strengths in more traditional academic subjects. We have chosen to focus on subjects which will stand the test of time and are well respected by employers and universities alike. Even within our vocational offer we only deliver subjects which we think will develop, challenge and inspire our students and lead directly to further study or great employment opportunities.
We have endeavored to stay away from the latest "fad" courses and by talking to respected universities and employers have chosen to offer courses which do not lead to students specialising their studies too early since this can restrict future employment or study options as well as potentially reducing student choice should they have a change of heart.
Our curriculum offer is also differentiated so that different student approaches can be accommodated, for instance through options to study both ICT or Computing or indeed Music or Music Technology.
As with everything we do in Huish Sixth, the final curriculum choices will revolve around each individual student and will be drawn up after discussions with the Director of Post-16 Education to discover a student's interests as well as their aspirations. Once again the size of Huish Sixth is an advantage here since we are able to vocational and academic courses alongside each other as well as currently offering a 4 AS curriculum offer alongside a 3 A Level offer which we believe offers students the best choice.
