What is in a medicine?
What new fuels do we need to develop?
Why do onions make you cry?
How is Chemistry linked to art?
Can you turn lead into gold?

The OCR Salters A Level Chemistry B course will give you an exciting insight into the contemporary world
of Chemistry. It covers a range of different contexts, conveying the excitement of contemporary Chemistry.
This combination of academic challenge, relevant context and practical focus makes the prospect of studying
A level Chemistry B highly appealing. You will learn about Chemistry in a range of different contexts and the
impact it has on industry and many aspects of everyday life. You will learn to investigate and solve problems
in a range of contexts.

Course Content and Assessment
This is a 2 year course in which organic, inorganic and physical
chemistry are delivered through a variety of exciting storylines.
The topics in year 2 build upon the foundations laid in year 1
to enable the learner to fully understand the links between the
different disciplines. A significant amount of the course is spent
developing practical skills through a range of experimental
opportunities.

Year 1 Topics:
Elements of life
Developing fuels
Elements from the sea
The ozone story
What's in a medicine?

Year 2 Topics:
The chemical industry
Polymers and life
Oceans
Developing metals
Colour by design

Assessment:
Three written papers in the May/June of Year 13 (of which 20% of
the marks available are for the assessment of Mathematics at level
2 or higher within a Chemistry context).
In addition to the A level, students can also achieve a separate
Practical Endorsement which is assessed internally.

Extending Your Experience
The emphasis of this course is on real life Chemistry and the ideas
and principles of Chemistry are learned in context. This brings
chemical principles alive and reduces the need to learn theory out
of context. A wide range of teaching and learning activities are
incorporated together with practical laboratory skills. Many students
choose to use their knowledge and skills learnt within the course to
achieve exciting and challenging work experience placements.

Entry Requirements:
You will require a minimum of grade B in higher tier
GCSE Science and Mathematics or equivalent, but we
will consider other students on an individual basis in
exceptional circumstances.
