This is a broad based course which incorporates Art and Design to celebrate and encourage individuality. It builds on experiences and skills developed at GCSE. You will study and develop your work in the following areas: Fine Art, Painting and Drawing, Graphic Communication, Three Dimensional Design, Print Making or Photography – lens based and light based media.
Course Content
Unit 1: Coursework based portfolio (25%). A themed unit, including tutor set tasks and workshops that cover all four assessment objectives, leading to self set outcome, showing off your strengths.
Unit 2: Externally set assignment (25%). A unit focussing on experimentation and use of materials with a final piece produced in preparation for exam conditions.
Unit 3: Personal Investigation (25%). A major project covering all the assessment objectives plus a written assessment. This is a totally self set unit of work using your teachers for guidance, but again working to an individual’s strengths.
Unit 4: Externally set assignment (25%). Supervised 15 hour exam. Selecting one of the exam board’s themes, produce your own unit of work, covering the four assessment objectives, demonstrating your skills, culminating in a three day exam (15 hours).
Extending Your Experience
The course will be based within the Sixth Form Centre in the modern studio space which will have access to kilns, Apple Mac studio, graphic facilities and exhibition spaces. The course is enriched through regular trips to London museums and galleries, as well as regional visits to the Arnolfini, Bristol or the Tate Gallery, St. Ives. We also plan study trips abroad, for example, Paris or New York, to visit galleries, museums, workshops and practical art work.
Entry Requirements:
The course requires students to have achieved a grade 5 or higher at GCSE, but we will consider any motivated student who can demonstrate their enthusiasm and involvement.
Where will this course take me?
This course suits a creative, flexible person who likes the challenge of open ended, self supported study. It provides an appropriate foundation for further study in Higher Education. There are many areas from which to choose:
Jewellery, Furniture and Product Design, Ceramics, Sculpture, Fashion, Textiles, Exhibition Design, Photography, Art and Design for the Theatre. It also supports careers in Architecture, Conservation, Film, Media and Journalism.
