Huish Academy

“Those who are not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life” Muhammad Ali

Physical Education offers students of all abilities a wide range of sporting opportunities, making full use of Huish Episcopi Academy's excellent sports facilities. All students have 4 lessons of core PE a fortnight, with the KS3 curriculum focused on developing the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding required to lead a healthy active lifestyle. Students participate in the more traditional activities such as hockey, football, swimming and gymnastics.

At KS4, the curriculum is tailored towards students' own needs and goals, enabling them to choose the option block they wish to participate in. This ranges from the Competitive Sports block, with sports such as rugby and hockey, to the Health Related Fitness block, with activities such as spinning, body pump and insanity.

Academic PE
The Physical Education department offers examination courses through BTEC qualifications, at both KS4 and KS5 and GCSE PE. Results are outstanding, with 96 % pass rate on the BTEC Level 2 course, with 24 % of students achieving an A*-A equivalent grade. Results at KS5 are equally as impressive, with the average grade per entry a Distinction Star in the BTEC Level 3 – the highest grade possible. The department hopes to introduce A Level PE from September 2016, to run alongside the current Btec Sport L3 course.

Extra-Curricular Activities
Extracurricular activities are seen as highly important at the Academy and all students are encouraged to become involved. The department runs clubs and activities for all abilities in a diverse range of sports. We also run a significant number of successful competitive teams, which enter local, county and national competitions.

The Physical Education department also offers students the opportunity to achieve the Young Leader Award. This award enables students at Huish Episcopi Academy to develop skills such as organisation, communication and teamwork. These skills enable our students to organise and lead small games and activities in the local community, whilst helping build their confidence and self-esteem.

Sports Facilities at Huish Episcopi Academy
Such a diverse range of sports and fitness activities on offer at Huish Episcopi Academy are only possible due to our exceptional sports facilities. These include a sports hall, 25m outdoor heated swimming pool, 23-station air-conditioned fitness suite, 2 squash courts, exercise studio, gymnasium, outdoor hard courts and numerous excellent grass pitches for football, rugby and cricket. The Academy is currently progressing with its plan to build a floodlight artificial grass pitch, which will replace the redgra. The PE department also has its own teaching room in the new Geography block, with 30 laptops, to assist in teaching academic PE.
