Overview

Drama and Theatre is a dynamic and creative course that develops confidence, communication and collaboration. Students explore how theatre is created through acting, directing, design and performance, while developing valuable analytical and evaluative skills. 

Through practical workshops, live theatre visits and academic study, students engage with a wide variety of theatrical styles, practitioners and texts. The course offers an exciting balance of creativity and critical thinking, preparing students for higher education and a wide range of careers. 


Course Content

A Level Drama has the following topics:
  • Create and perform original devised theatre. 

  • Perform extracts from published plays for assessment. 

  • Study influential theatre practitioners including Stanislavski, Brecht and Frantic Assembly. 

  • Analyse and interpret contemporary and classical theatre texts. 

  • Watch and evaluate live professional theatre productions. 

  • Develop skills in acting, directing and design for performance. 

  • Explore how theatre communicates meaning to an audience. 

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Mathematics and English Language. It is not mandatory to have taken Drama GCSE.  

How is it Assessed?

Component 1: Devising (40%) 

  • Practical group performance and devising portfolio 

Component 2: Text in Performance (20%) 

  • Performance of a scripted extract and monologue  

Component 3: Theatre Makers in Practice (40%) 

  • Written examination and live theatre evaluation
