Student Leadership

Student leadership is at the heart of our commitment to developing confident, responsible, and ambitious young people. We believe every student should have the opportunity to make a positive difference to our school community, develop valuable leadership skills, and become active citizens who are ready to contribute to society. Through a wide range of leadership programmes, students are encouraged to take on responsibility, represent the views of others, and lead meaningful change across the academy.

Student Leadership Opportunities at Huish

Be Her Lead

Our Be Her Lead programme empowers young women to develop the confidence, skills, and ambition needed to become future leaders. Students engage in leadership workshops, mentoring opportunities, and projects that encourage them to challenge barriers, celebrate their strengths, and make a positive impact within the school and wider community. The programme promotes self-belief, resilience, and aspiration.

House Champions and House Representatives

Our House Champions and House Representatives play a vital role in leading and promoting the academy's successful House System. Working closely with House Leaders and staff, they encourage participation in competitions and events, help organise activities, celebrate achievements, and motivate students to earn House Points for their house. They act as ambassadors for their houses, fostering a sense of belonging, teamwork, and healthy competition while developing leadership, communication, and organisational skills.

Prefects

The Prefect Team serves as role models for younger students and supports the wider school community. Prefects demonstrate the highest standards of conduct and consistently embody our values of Respect, Resilience, and Ambition. They assist with school events, welcome visitors, support students, and contribute to the smooth running of academy life while developing confidence, leadership, and organisational skills.

Rights Respecting Ambassadors

Our Rights Respecting Ambassadors play a leading role in promoting children's rights across the academy as part of our journey towards achieving the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award Silver Accreditation. These students help raise awareness of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, lead campaigns, organise events, and ensure that student voice remains central to school improvement. Through this work, they develop advocacy, leadership, and citizenship skills while helping to create a culture of dignity, respect, and equality.

Sixth Form Leadership Team

The Sixth Form Leadership Team represents the student body and serves as ambassadors for the academy. Working alongside staff and younger students, members lead whole-school initiatives, support key events, promote charitable activities, and contribute to strategic discussions about academy life. This prestigious role allows students to develop advanced leadership, public speaking, and organisational skills while leaving a lasting legacy within the school community.

Sports Leaders

The Sports Leadership Programme enables students to inspire participation in physical activity across the academy. Sports Leaders help organise and officiate competitions, support PE lessons and enrichment activities, and encourage younger students to become involved in sport. The programme develops teamwork, communication, responsibility, and leadership while promoting healthy and active lifestyles.

Student Council

Our Student Council provides students with a powerful voice in shaping the life of the academy. Representatives are elected to gather the views of their peers, work closely with staff, and contribute ideas to improve the school experience for all students. Through regular meetings and projects, Student Council members develop communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while helping to create a positive and inclusive school environment.

Developing Leaders for the Future

Through these diverse leadership opportunities, students at Huish Episcopi Academy are encouraged to step forward, take responsibility, and make a meaningful contribution to the academy and beyond. Whether leading school improvement, championing children's rights, supporting sport, or representing their peers, our student leaders develop the character, confidence, and skills needed to thrive as future leaders in their communities and careers.
