An exciting and innovative approach to Biology, Salters Nuffield Advanced Biology known as ‘SNAB,’ is taught through real-life biology. For example, most A level Biology courses start with cell biology or biochemistry; we don’t. We start with an account of Mark, a 15-year-old who had a stroke, and Peter, an adult who had a heart attack. We then go on from the details of their cases to look at the factors that make it more likely that any of us will suffer from a stroke or heart attack. This allows you to meet the biochemistry of fats and carbohydrates bit by bit, as you need to know them, to understand about strokes and heart diseases, rather than all at once.

A Level

Topic1: Lifestyle, Health and Risk Topic 2: Genes and Health

Topic 3: Voice of the Genome

Topic 4: Biodiversity and Natural Resources Topics 5: On the Wild Side

Topic 6: Immunity, Infection and Forensics Topic 7: Run for your Life

Topic 8: Grey Matter

Though all topics general and practical applications in Biology are considered.

The A level is assessed by three written examinations (2 hours each), each worth 33.33% in May/June of Year

13.

Overall, a minimum of 10% of the marks across the three papers will be awarded for Mathematics at level 2 or above. Science Practical Endorsement is internally assessed and externally moderated through 18 practical activities over the two years. This is reported separately on students’ certificates alongside their overall grade for the A Level qualification.

Entry requirements

The course requires students to have achieved a grade B or higher at GCSE, but we will consider any motivated student who can demonstrate their enthusiasm and involvement.

Extending Your Experience

Every year you will have the opportunity to participate in field trips and attend lectures that allow you to experience the Biology discussed in class, outside of the classroom. These trips include visits to the zoo, field study centres and universities.

Where will this course take me?

Biology is an academically rigorous subject that is a suitable qualification for any university course.

Biology, in combination with other A levels, can lead to university courses in Natural Sciences, the Biomedical Sciences (Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Physiology), Genetics, Psychology, Biology and various specialisms such as Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, Forensic Science and Marine Biology.Where will this course take me?
