The OCR Salters A Level Chemistry B course will give you an exciting insight into the contemporary world of Chemistry. It covers a range of different contexts, conveying the excitement of contemporary Chemistry.

This combination of academic challenge, relevant context and practical focus makes the prospect of studying A level Chemistry B highly appealing. You will learn about Chemistry in a range of different contexts and the impact it has on industry and many aspects of everyday life. You will learn to investigate and solve problems in a range of contexts.

Course Content and Assessment

This is a 2 year course in which organic, inorganic and physical chemistry are delivered through a variety of exciting storylines. The topics in year 2 build upon the foundations laid in year 1 to enable the learner to fully understand the links between the different disciplines. A significant amount of the course is spent developing practical skills through a range of experimental opportunities.

Year 1 Topics:

Elements of life Developing fuels Elements from the sea The ozone story What’s in a medicine?

Year 2 Topics:

The chemical industry Polymers and life Oceans

Developing metals Colour by design

Assessment:

Three written papers in the May/June of Year 13 (of which 20% of the marks available are for the assessment of Mathematics at level 2 or higher within a Chemistry context).

In addition to the A level, students can also achieve a separate Practical Endorsement which is assessed internally.

Extending Your Experience

The emphasis of this course is on real life Chemistry and the ideas and principles of Chemistry are learned in context. This brings chemical principles alive and reduces the need to learn theory out of context. A wide range of teaching and learning.
