Why study Criminology?

This course looks at the types of crime that take place within our society. How do we decide which behaviour is criminal? How do we explain why some people commit crime and how can we use different theories of criminality to explain this behaviour? You will study real life cases in order to gain an understanding of the criminal justice system from the crime scene all the way to the courtroom and look at how social control is achieved within our society.

The Applied Level 3 Criminology Diploma consists of four units in total, two internally assessed units and two externally assessed units, all with the opportunity to re-sit.

UNIT 1: Changing Awareness of Crime

Plan a campaign for change relating to crime.

Understand why crimes go unreported to the police and media, and the consequences.

Internal/Controlled assessment: 8 hours.

UNIT 2: Criminological Theories

Understand why people commit crime and the theories of criminality.

External examination: 1 hour 30 minutes.

UNIT 3: Crime Scene to Courtroom

Understand the criminal justice system.

Develop the skills needed to examine criminal cases and review verdicts.

Internal/Controlled assessment: 8 hours.

UNIT 4: Crime and Punishment

Apply theories and processes of bringing the accused to court.

Evaluate the effectiveness of social control agencies.

External examination: 1 hour 30 minutes.

Online specification and delivery guidance provide reference to suggested learning activities, textbooks, websites, cases, films and other resources which could be used during the teaching of each unit.

Where will the Applied Level 3 Criminology take you?

Designed to support students progressing to University (equivalent to 1 A-level), this course does carry UCAS points and many Universities accept this qualification. Level 3 Criminology will prepare you for a Criminology or Psychology degree and a wide range of career options. These may include careers in the police force or in police support roles, the field of forensic psychology, social and probation work or the prison services
